Documenting Character Traits with Jess Forster

Hands up if you’re a fan of writing notes to you kiddos? Journaling love letters to my children is a technique that I often use in my layouts. When I saw three, 3″ x 4″ bright teal journaling tags in the January 2019 Kit, I was inspired to document some of the character traits that are emerging in my daughter! Have a look:

Supplies | January 2019 Kit, January Labels, So Loved Shipping TagsHappiness Found Stickers, Sweetheart Puffy StickersBlack and White Polka Dot Puffy Alphabet Stickers, Wood Veneer Hearts, Love You Acrylic

In this 9″ x 12″ double pocket page layout, I highlighted my daughter’s patience and flexibility she displayed during a recent family adventure one Saturday afternoon. Simple details of that September 2018 outing were recounted on the “important notes” 3″ x 4″ journaling tag.

I loved the photo of my daughter doing a full backbend so much that I enlarged it to 9″ x 12″. Using the “photo details” journaling tag, I noted the photo symbolism about “being flexible” in both body and mind. I wrote from a present day perspective, reflecting & telling a deeper story of how far my girl has come in these last 5 months.  My daughter is on the autism spectrum, and patience and flexibility are two character traits my husband and I are actively trying to help her cultivate. I am so happy that she has real amazing moments of being easy going and calm.

Lastly, on the teal, 3″ x 4″ bullet journaling card, I noted some of daughter’s other values or behaviours that we are noticing. I wanted to acknowledge and positively reinforce them. Jotting down simple traits in a list, also helps to expand the layers of the story I am telling.

Hooray for black, white and teal colour combinations as well as telling a story from a variety of vantage points! I hope I have inspired you to document your own, or your children’s character traits that are emerging within your family.

Thanks for looking and thank you to Elle for making cheerful journaling tags that encourage us to tell stories!

Circles of Fun with Candace Perkins

A fresh year brings new excitement, possibilities, and maybe some new crafty goals?! We have the perfect products for you to start your memory-keeping off right in 2019! Our January Kit and extras will have you itching to create, and today, design team member Candace Perkins had a lot of fun with her new goodies to create an equally fun scrapbook layout. Let’s take a look:

Hello, Elle’s Studio friends! It’s Candace here wishing you a happy and beautiful 2019! I am excited to be with you for another year spreading the Elle’s Studio fun & love! I think the January kits are always my favorite kits!  I love the bright colors along with all the fun icons and shapes, and I am always so inspired to get more creative with my shapes and page design when I see the January kit. I hope it inspires you to do the same! Here is the page I was inspired to create with the January Kit and add-ons.

Supplies | January 2019 KitJanuary LabelsHappiness Found Stickers, Sweetheart Puffy StickersWood Veneer HeartsAll My Heart 6 x 6 Paper Stack

The base of my 12″ x 12″ layout started with white cardstock. Next, I punched out a bunch of 3″ x 3″ circles from the new All My Heart 6 x 6 Paper Stack and tags from the exclusive January 2019 Kit. After arranging all the circles on the page, I adhered some with dimensional adhesive and others straight down to the card stock. I love the fun look of dimension this adds! I looked through all the fun, new embellishments released this month and matched them up with the colors in my 3″ x 3″ circles.

I thought it would also be fun to play with different textures.  I added the Wood Veneer Hearts, Sweetheart Puffy Stickers and bits of thread to add interest to the page and play with different textures.

For my title, I added the Black and White Polka Dot Puffy Alphabet Stickers around a fun photo along with a die cut from the January Kit.  I LOVE these new puffy alpha stickers! LOVE!!!

What a fun layout!  I love that I was able to just sit down and play—forget the world, work, and everything else, and just PLAY!  This is what scrapbooking and memory keeping is all about! PLAY!

Have a beautiful day!

Love You Guys with Guest Designer Heba Alsibai

In case you missed it, our January guest designer, Heba Alsibai, had fun creating with our January Kit and add-ons in her traveler’s notebook last week! Today she’s with us to share a new TN layout of a fun and energetic moment, and she used the perfect products to document it! Let’s take a look:

Hello everyone! Today I want to share a traveler’s notebook layout that I created using the beautiful January Kit and add-ons from Elle Studio. Every year, since my son been in high school, he goes to homecoming with all his marching band friends. I always take the opportunity to snap some photos of him and his friends before the party starts. This picture on my layout today was one of my favorites! I love how it captures their fun and light personalities.

Supplies | January 2019 KitJanuary Labels, So Loved Shipping Tags, Happiness Found StickersJane Alphabet Stickers – Black, Sweetheart Puffy Stickers, Wood Veneer Hearts, Happy Heart Stamp, All My Heart 6 x 6 Paper Stack

To start my layout, I trimmed my picture so it would sit nicely between the fold of my TN. Then used some of the patterns from the All My Heart 6 x 6 Paper Stack to layer under my picture. I also used three of the So Loved Shipping Tags to add journaling and more depth to my layout. I love the way the photo really pops against the black and white tags.

For my title, I used the Sweetheart Puffy Stickers to add the “heart you” sticker, then I added the black Jane Alphabet Stickers to finish the title with “guys.” This added a pop of color to my spread, which otherwise would have been a B&W layout. Then I used the heart banner from the Sweetheart Puffy Stickers across the left side,  just to add more puffiness and cuteness to this already cute picture of my son and his friends.

Next, I added the January Labels across and under my picture. I tried to include labels with the same colors from my title, to ensure that it looked balanced. I love the detail that the labels add to the page!

To finish the layout, I added some Wood Veneer Hearts and stamped a few more using the Happy Heart Stamp on the opposite side, just to balance everything out. I really love how fast and easy this spread came together using the beautiful new releases.

Thank you so much for joining me here today. I hope that I’ve given you some inspiration to use your new kit and embellishments!

Hello everyone! My name is Heba Alsibai, I’m a mother of two teenagers and a wife to a wonderful husband. My husband and I own a small medical supply company that keeps my husband traveling and me working from home. I love that I’m able to work from home, I get to see my kids go off to school and welcome them home when they get back. I live in the beautiful state of Georgia far from the hustle and bustle of Atlanta. I am a total homebody that loves to read and loves to watch reruns of Friends. But by far my favorite thing to do is crafting. I also love sharing my crafty projects on my YouTube channel and Instagram.

Back in 2001 When I gave birth to my first born, I started keeping a little scrapbook album for him. It wasn’t your traditional scrapbook album. It was more of journaling milestones and documenting pictures with dates. I also did the same with my daughter once she was born. But in 2007 I moved to Dubai and became friends with my next-door neighbor who was an avid scrapbooker. Once she shared her beautiful scrapbooking layouts with me, I was hooked.

My crafting journey started with creating traditional scrapbooking layout. But in 2011 I discovered pocket pages and completely switch to pocket page memory keeping. Documenting our daily stories in pockets became something that I enjoyed because of the ease and simplicity of it.

But in 2016 I found traveler’s notebooks and I was so excited to be able to be creative outside the pocket again. I didn’t know how much I missed creating layouts until I found traveler’s notebooks. What I love the most about these notebooks is the size. They are small, so you never feel overwhelmed or intimidated by the size. Not like a traditional scrapbooking layouts. You can create a spread in no time at all. Some of my favorite memories were done in a traveler’s notebook.

With that said, no matter what format I use, as long as I’m crafting I’m happy :). I’m excited to share some of my layouts with you, using the Elle Studio January kit and embellishments!

We can’t wait to see what Heba will share with us next week! Until then, please follow her beautiful work on her YouTube feed and on Instagram.

Happy Heart Stamp Love with Amanda Baldwin

Hi, Elle’s Studio friends! It’s Amanda here, and today I am sharing some Happy Heart Stamp LOVE! We all know that Elle’s Studio offers premium, high end, clear stamps, but this latest stamp is my absolute, hands down, number one new favorite!

And here’s exactly why…

Supplies | Happy Heart Stamp, January 2019 Kit, All My Heart 6 x 6 Paper Stack, Happiness Found Stickers, Wood Veneer Hearts, Black Puffy Alphabet Stickers, Acrylic Stamp Block 3 x 4 Inches

Oh.my.heart! Stamping never looked so impressive! Absolutely sensational! Here’s a better look at that stamped background for you…..

Ahh-MAZING! Happy heart, indeed!

I started this background by applying shimmering ink sprays in pinks and purples with the packaging technique. I also applied them to form a triangle shape, and fade out as they reach the edge of the right hand side. I used these very same colors to add splatters and droplets too!

Once dry, I took the confetti / polka dot stamp and repeat stamp it in red, purple and raspberry inks. I payed particular attention to the edges of my mixed media color work, so it created the appearance of even more paint splatters.

Next, I applied the larger heart stamps around the painted edges, using raspberry ink for the striped heart & purple ink for the open heart. Using the same purple ink, I repeat stamped the “Love You” sentiment, and for added interest, I even added it inside two of the open hearts.

I repeat stamped “XO” with the raspberry ink, ensuring that it was bold in some prints and really faded out in others. The circular heart icon stamp was applied in the same fashion, but with red stamp ink instead.

I kept to the same red, purple & raspberry inks as this type of stamping can get a lil messy, and I didn’t want my background to distract from my photo! Using similar and like colors in mixed media backgrounds aids to soften the busy appearance. The colors tend to compliment each other and blend more. For a more noticeable print, and to cut through all of that sweet color work, I used black ink for the “Love This” phrase. So striking!

I also inked up the Wood Veneer Hearts, and strategically arranged them around my photograph so that they repeated the triangular form of the mixed media background. Repeating patterns, shape and form is very aesthetically pleasing on the eye. Using repetition in this layout design kept the mixed media base from appearing too messy or over done.

My photo was backed with blue & purple papers from the All My Heart 6 x 6 Paper Stack, some distressed white tissue paper, a label, tag and sticker or two from the January Kit and new releases. I kept the layering simple as there is quite enough visual stimulation with that amazing stamped background.

For finishing touches, I applied the Black Puffy Alphabet Stickers for my rather apt title, #lovefiercely. His face says it all!

Stamping magic! Looking for more Happy Heart Stamp inspiration? ALL of my Elle’s Studio projects for January have featured this incredible stamp! You can see them here & even here! Yep, I told you, it is my number one favorite stamp!

I hope I have inspired you to get your ink on, and thanks so much for visiting the blog today!

Simple Approaches to Pocket Journaling with Steph Grimes

Hello everyone! This is Steph Grimes and I am so excited to be a part of the Elle’s Studio design team for 2019! This is my first time on a design team and I hope to share projects that are inspiring and fun. For my first project, I have created a 12×12” double page pocket page spread using the January Kit and add-ons that documents a recent trip to our local amusement park for their Christmas event.

Supplies | January 2019 Kit, January Labels, January Blank Label Stickers, Sweetheart Puffy Stickers, Happy Heart Stamp, Black and White Polka Dot Puffy Alphabet Stickers, Happiness Found Stickers, Jane Alphabet Stickers – Navy, Hazel Alphabet Stickers – Gray, Mini Dated Stamp

Pocket pages are currently my favorite approach to memory keeping and I like them primarily because they are a quick way for me to get my stories documented. This means that I can work fast to get enough details of my stories told to be meaningful, but not so many details that I’m writing a ton. Besides, by working in pockets you only have so much space to work with and I *try* to keep my albums from being too full each year. I’ve been using Elle’s Studio products in my pocket pages for a little over a year now and they are perfect for capturing the details of my stories in a concise way. So for today’s project, I’d like to share with you a few of my favorite (and fast!) ways to get journaling into your pockets.

Focus on the Highlights

One of the fastest ways to get down some journaling about your week or a specific experience is to just capture the highlights. For this spread, I used this purple tag from the January 2019 Kit that was perfect for just a few notes. I added “the best” sticker from the Happiness Found Stickers and number stickers from the Black and White Polka Dot Puffy Alphabet Stickers to create a way to include the best things about our trip; in this case, the top three best things about the day. The sticker provided a great prompt so I didn’t have to provide any additional context about what I was writing here.

Snippets for More Context

One of my favorite approaches to journaling in my pocket pages is using the labels and label stickers that come with the kits. These provide just a little bit of space, so I have to really think about what I want to say and how few words I can say it in to add additional context to a photo or story. Here I used one of the 4″ x 6” tags from the January Kit and added two small photos, a banner from the kit and a little more context to the overall story in the space provided on the tag. In the photo below, I took the same approach but used one of the January Labels to add a sentence to give a little more context to the photo in that pocket.

Follow a Prompt

The Elle’s Studio journaling tags that come in the kits are great for journaling, but sometimes, they even come with a prompt specifically meant to help guide your story. This is always appreciated! Sometimes I get stuck for how to do my journaling or what to write and these can often provide just the spark I need to get started. So for this project, I started with the tag from the January Kit that includes the 5 W’s—Who, What, Where, When, Why—and that gave me the perfect jumping-off point for telling this story, as well as the approach I wanted to take of including little bits of journaling here and there throughout the spread. To fill in some of the space at the top of the card, I used two die cuts from the January Kit and a few dot puffy stickers from the Sweetheart Puffy Stickers to add a little embellishment to the card.

Make a List

I love lists! Do you love lists? They are a simple way to include details and information and they are just perfect for pockets with limited space. Many of the journaling tags included in the monthly kit provide a perfect space for a list, like the purple tag above, but once I had used that, I couldn’t find another that would work well for this specific project, so I made my own! I cut-down a piece of white cardstock to 3″ x 4” to fit the pocket and stamped out four list spaces using the Happy Heart Stamp. This stamp set is awesome because it not only has a bunch of cute decorative sayings and embellishments, but also includes some really functional journaling stamps, like this one. I had some notes in my phone of each of our favorite things from throughout the day, so I picked four of them to include on this card and just wrote them in using a pen. I created my own prompt or title for this tag called “Favorite Things” by adding one of the kit die cut pieces and then spelling out the word “things” using the Hazel Alphabet Stickers. To finish this tag, I added some of the two-tone dot puffy stickers from the Sweetheart Puffy Stickers—I just love those!

To finish off this spread, I used another 4″ x 6” tag from the January Kit to create a title card. I wanted some variety in my title so I used both the Jane Alphabet Stickers and the Hazel Alphabet Stickers in two different colors. Then I added two labels from the January Blank Label Stickers and cut them down a bit because I love elements that interact with the edges. I stamped the date using the Mini Dated Stamp, which fits so well inside the labels, and a teal puffy heart from theSweetheart Puffy Stickers to finish it off.

I hope this has provided some ideas for quick and easy journaling that helps you to get more stories told on your projects! The products in the January Kit and add-ons work really well to support this approach to journaling and documenting your life’s happenings!

Combining Pockets and Layouts with Suzanna Stein

The beginning of the year is a great time to take stock of how last year went and make some intentions or goals for yourself. In the combination pocket page and layout that returning design team member Suzanna Stein created, she’s doing just that using our January kit and add-ons! Let’s take a look:

Hey there crafty pals! I’m excited to share this layout with you, created using the January Kit and extras. I combined a pocket page and a 6″ x 8″ layout to capture the beginning of the year in my personal album.

Supplies | January 2019 Kit, Happy Heart Stamp, All My Heart 6 x 6 Paper Stack, Sweetheart Puffy Stickers, Heart and Star Acetate Die Cuts, Wood Veneer Hearts, Happiness Found Stickers, Black and White Polka Dot Puffy Alphabet Stickers, January Labels, Here and Now Stamp, Small Months of the Year Wood Veneers, Large Jane Number Stamp

I started with a couple of journaling tags from the January 2019 Kit on the left page, added some embellishments, then stamped and fussy cut 2019 using the Large Jane Number Stamp.

For the bottom journaling tag, I used the All My Heart Paper Stack to create a 4″ x 6″ tag, and I topped with an embellishment cluster of tags, alphas, and phrase stickers.

I used the 6″ x 8″ page as a blank canvas to create a mini scrapbook layout.  I used the same style I use for my 8.5″ x 11” layouts—a few pieces of paper from the All My Heart Paper Stack and journaling tags from the January Kit for layering. I backed my photo, and once it was in place, I started embellishing. I went with embellishment clusters, just as I would on a full-size layout, and created a diagonal line for the eye to follow using stamped hearts, acetate die cut hearts, and wood veneer hearts.

I loved using the combination of layout and pocket page in this project! I hope this gave you a few ideas to use on your next project!

Love Sentiments and Backgrounds with Patricia Roebuck

Hello Elle’s Studio friends!  This is Patricia, and I couldn’t be more excited to be here today to share with you how to combine the January 2019 Kit and a few extras to make quick and easy sentiments and backgrounds to create one of a kind cards for that special someone.

Supplies | January 2019 Kit, Happy Heart Stamp, Jane Alphabet Stamp, Sweetheart Puffy Stickers

If you are like me, as you work with the Elle’s Studio kits, you get more inspired by the product.  The “yes, no, maybe” tag from the January Kit inspired my cards.  Using that tag for my first card, I started by creating a background using the Happy Heart Stamp.

Combining the Happy Heart Stamp image with three different inks varying in lightest to darkest in shades of blue and green created a nice warm and cozy weave affect for my panel.  Leaving some white space on the card panel, I then adhered the “yes, no, maybe” tag and die cuts from the January Kit on top.  Then finished the card with the Sweetheart Puffy Stickers to complete my sentiment.

Perfect for giving to your significant other! I kept with that same ‘love’ feel for the second card, inspired by the “I Love You!” die cut from the January Kit.  The “today” tag from the kit along with the Jane Alphabet Stamp added to my idea of building on my sentiment.

Don’t be afraid to cut your tags to use them two ways on your project as I did for this card. I wanted the “today” part of the tag to be a big part of my sentiment, so I trimmed it from the tag, then punched a 1” circle from the rest of the tag, and stapled the Today and punched circle together.

I created another background using the Happy Heart Stamp in two shades of pink ink with a contrast of blue ink, trimmed that down to adhere to my card panel, then stamped hearts from the Happy Heart Stamp in the same background colors to detail cut and layer on top.  Using the Jane Alphabet Stamp, I finished my sentiment by stamping the ampersand on the remainder of the “today” tag, tucked it under my stamped background, then stamped ‘always’ on a die cut from the January Kit.

As you work through your January 2019 Kit and extras for your memory keeping, look at new ways like this to build sentiments and backgrounds to create quick cards.  You will be happy to have these in your collection and ready to give, but most of all, enjoy creating them!

A Clothesline of Fun with Mary-Ann Maldonado

We are so happy to welcome new design team member Mary-Ann Maldonado to the ES blog for her first post today! Mary-Ann has such a fun, colorful and dimensional paper crafting style, and the project that she’s sharing with us today is no exception! Let’s see what she created:

Morning, Elle’s fans! I am super excited to be joining this talented team for 2019! I have been playing with paper for years and Elle’s product has always been a go-to manufacturer for me. When I received the January 2019 Kit, I knew right away that one of my projects had to focus of the black and white So Loved Shipping Tags with support from the colorful January Kit and some Noteworthy papers.  Maybe I’d even use all of the tags!

Supplies | January 2019 Kit, January LabelsSo Loved Shipping Tags, January Blank Label Stickers, Happiness Found Stickers, Sweetheart Puffy StickersHeart and Star Acetate Die Cuts, Wood Veneer Hearts, XO Wood Confetti, Large Months of the Year Wood Veneers, All My Heart 6 x 6 Paper Stack, Noteworthy 12 x 12 Paper Collection

I didn’t get as far as using up all the tags from the January Kit, but I sure did give it a good try!  In my mind, I was going to create a clothesline of tags with my long photo strip. I started with a neutral and purple background using the Noteworthy 12 x 12 Paper Collection and began creating my layered tag clusters, laying them on the patterned paper background until it looked like my vision.

I wanted to incorporate some of the wood veneer extras too.  I used the September Large Months of the Year Wood Veneer piece, the Wood Veneer Hearts and the ‘O’s’ from the XO Wood Confetti.  I laced them through baker’s twine in between tags, and let them dangle.  I wanted some of the wood to stay in place so I used a touch of glue.

Smaller lengths of baker’s twine threaded through the So Loved Shipping Tags made them appear to be hanging from the “clothesline.” I topped my tag clusters with die cuts from the January Kit, as well as Happiness Found and Sweetheart Puffy Stickers.

To finish off my layout, I added a touch of journaling to a January Label.   Backing it with an Acetate Die Cut heart helped anchor the label and finish off the corner.

Thanks for stopping by to check out my first project as an ES girl!  I can not wait to see how you all use up those fun tags!  See you again real soon!

What will Mary-Ann’s beautiful clothesline-inspired project push you to create!? Share your project on Instagram using the hashtag #EllesStudio and you could be featured here on our blog and win a gift certificate to the shop, just for getting creative!

You Are Love With January Guest Designer Heba Alsibai

We are so excited to welcome one of our favorite paper crafting designers as the first guest designer for 2019, Heba Alsibai! Heba’s graphic, bold and colorful designs, especially in her traveler’s notebook spreads, consistently “WOW” us, and we are so excited to share what she’s created using our January kit and add-ons, and her post also includes a process video! Let’s take a look:

Hi everyone! My name is Heba Alsibai and I’m so excited to be this month’s guest designer! There’s so much good stuff in the January release, and I created a traveler’s notebook spread using some of my favorite products in the shop.

Supplies | January 2019 Kit, January Labels, Happiness Found Stickers, XO Wood Confetti, Sweetheart Puffy Stickers, Heart and Star Acetate Die Cuts, All My Heart 6 x 6 Paper Stack, Happy Heart Stamp, Jane Alphabet Stamp

I’m a big fan of the new All My Heart 6 x 6 Paper Stack that released this month and wanted to use as many patterns as I could on my traveler’s notebook spread. To make that happen, I cut them down into vertical strips then tore off the edges to give my layouts some texture. Cutting them virtually also helped make this photo of my daughter stand out.

Once I got all the strips of patterned paper stuck down, I layered my picture with some black tissue paper. I decided to use the Happy Heart Stamp to stamp these adorable polka dots randomly on my spread. I love stamps that can be used to add pattern to a blank background. This simple step adds a lot of interest to any background. I also used that same stamp set to do a little second generation stamping using the “XO” stamp. To complete my stamping I stamped “currently enjoying” right next to my daughter’s picture playing her favorite Play Station game.

I wanted my title to be simple and small. The letters in the Jane Alphabet Stamp were the perfect size for that. Even though these are small alphas, they sure add a big bang to my spread. My title wasn’t big enough to cover the whole strip of patterned paper, so I decided to add one of the Heart and Star Acetate Die Cuts right under it. This definitely added color and filled out the space.

My favorite part of crafting is definitely embellishing. The new January release had plenty of embellishments to choose from. If you know me you know I love puffy stickers, so I ended up adding a few hearts, speech bubbles and dots from the Sweetheart Puffy Stickers. I also made sure to add some of the XO Wood Confetti pieces in, just to bring in a different texture to my spread.

I really loved all the new embellishments and paper that released this month. The colors are so bright and beautiful, they just make you want to create! Check out the process video that I created while making this traveler’s notebook spread:
